Spay and Neuter FAQs

At Union Avenue Veterinary Hospital located in Tacoma, WA, we may be asked by clients if they should have their pet spayed or neutered. While we can't make that decision for you, we do recommend the procedure/surgery when your pet reaches the appropriate age. Not only is it an effective and humane way to control the pet population, it has other benefits as well. Below, we will explore those benefits and answer other common questions in our spay/neuter FAQ section:

Spay and Neuter FAqs

Is the Procedure/Surgery Safe?

Spaying and neutering are both major surgeries that involve the use of anesthesia, therefore there's always some level of risk involved. However, this is the most common type of surgery vets perform and pets must be in good health to be approved. Coupled with proper monitoring during surgery, the risks of spaying or neutering your pet are very low.

When Should I Spay/Neuter My Pet?

Although pets can be spayed or neutered at almost any age, it's recommended to have it done while your pet is still young.

What Are the Benefits of Spaying and Neutering?

Aside from preventing pregnancy, spaying and neutering can help improve both health and behavior. It removes the possibility of uterine and ovarian cancer in females and testicular cancer in males. It also reduces the risks of breast cancer, urinary tract infections, and potentially more. It's also been shown that “fixed” pets are calmer, less aggressive, less prone to roaming, and spraying (inappropriate urinating).

What Happens during the Surgery?

During the surgery, females will have their uterus and ovaries removed and males will have their testicles removed. The surgery takes place in a sterile surgical area while it is under anesthesia and carefully monitored.

What Can I Do to Help My Pet after the Surgery?

Once your pet is home, he will have stitches and a collar. He will also need a comfortable and quiet place to rest. Lastly, and most importantly, follow all of the vet's instructions post surgery.
